The Giant Bird of Paradise is famous for
its large and uniquely-shaped flower, thought by
many to resemble a colorful bird in flight. This
South African native is a clumping evergreen perennial
that forms a false trunk from the base of its lush
and glossy banana-like leaves. Impressive in their
own right, the 10 foot long leaves of the Giant
Bird of Paradise frame its showy flower with tropical
foliage. One of the most unusual members of the
banana family, the Giant Bird of Paradise is hardy
to 28 degrees, likes full to partial sun, regular
water and a humus-rich soil. It grows moderately
fast to 25 feet. |
